PAII News & Announcements: Welcome to PAII's First Edition of INNfo!

News
We've gathered together the Forum Digest, Vendor Announcements, Marketing Ops, and Membership Minutes into one weekly electronic publication. So you'll get all the same great information you've always received each week from PAII but with much less clutter in your inbox. We've also added some new features we think you'll like, such as our weekly "PAII Pointers": great little tips on cleaning, maintenance, and organization designed to help busy innkeepers make the most of their valuable time. We've also added a weekly recipe section: after all, great food goes with a great B&B. INNfo is the place where we'll make sure that you know about the latest happenings that affect our industry, from updates on gas prices, new research reports, discounts on PAII publications, approaching deadlines, or scam alerts. The information you need each week will be right here: in PAII's INNfo!

PAII Forum Digest: Scratchy Towels, E-Mail Databases, & More

If you have not had time to log on to the Forum located in the Members Only section of www.paii.org,
here are some of the interesting topics that have been discussed this past week.

Scratchy Towels
Lately, we are running into this towel dilemma. People started to complain about the softener we use on our towels. The problem is that when we are using Downy Softener, we get complaints from those who have allergies. When we are using a detergent (Tide with a touch of Downy), we get complaints that the towels feel scratchy. If somebody has a solution to this problem, please get back to me.

E-mail Databases
Does anyone do a monthly e-mail to your database? Does anyone HAVE a database? We're new to the B&B world, and wonder if this is an effective way to reach those that have stayed in the past or have signed up via your site.

Homestead Exemption
Does anybody have info on whether or not you can keep your homestead exemption if you have only one to three rooms? At what point does a homestay B&B become an inn?

Re Previous Post: Request for Later Check-Ins #5
I really try to focus on giving options and opinions here on the forum, not pushing a particular solution, but I keep seeing the key-leaving come back up in different threads and I really wanted to post this again. Some of you might remember the post where a key was left at the door in an envelope for a late arrival and said late arrival turned out to be thieves using a stolen credit card for deposit who cleaned the common areas and their guest room out to the tune of $20,000.00. It's scary enough that it's hard to forget! Well, that was us.

Re Previous Post: Breakfast to Go #6
What we do a bit differently is in the packaging. We take the opportunity to market the inn through our "To Go" bag. I buy white gift bags (with cloth handles) in packages of 10 from Party City. We have a 2.5" by 1" sticker with our logo, inn name, and address that we affix to both sides of the bag. We have had reservations from people who talked to guests carrying our bag at the airport. The bags cost a bit more than brown paper lunch bags but seem to go over well and have helped to generate room nights. (back to top)

Food Feature: Wings Hill Inn Quick Crepe Recipe

Let us feature a recipe from your inn!
Please send your submission (and a photo of the dish if available) to stacey@paii.org.

Tracey and Christopher Anderson from Wings Hill Inn in Belgrade Lakes, ME (www.wingshillinn.com) have a quick crepe recipe that they use all the time. It's super simple: all the ingredients get put in the blender for 1 minute. End of mixing!

1 cup water
1 cup milk
4 eggs
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp salt
2 oz. oil

Blend for 1 minute to combine the ingredients well. (You may need to scrape the sides once.) Heat your pans, pour a bit of oil in them, and then pour the oil right back out. Add batter to the pan with a ladle, rotating the pan to spread. THE BATTER SHOULD SIZZLE IMMEDIATELY. Use only enough batter to coat the pan. Flip when cooked...enough to release; same for the other side.

You can play with the recipe to suit your whim. Add fresh chopped herbs, or a bit of lemon extract. For sweet crepes, add a touch of brown sugar to the batter. (back to top)

PAII Pointer: Preserving Printed Memories

Would you like a quick and easy way to preserve the latest newspaper article that featured your establishment? Just soak it in the following mixture for 20 minutes: one cup of milk of magnesia and one large bottle of club soda. Let it dry and your printed memory will be preserved for many years.
